1:51 am - Yuletide 2011 Fic Roundup
|

Thought I'd take it upon myself to post this, since it hasn't been done yet this year. I think I caught everything, but let me know if there's any fic I overlooked.
Four fics in A Song for Arbonne, Fionavar Tapestry, and Lions of Al-Rassan
A Chord of Roses (2085 words) by mithen Fandom: A Song For Arbonne - Guy Gavriel Kay Rating: Teen And Up Audiences Warning: Author Chose Not To Use Archive Warnings Relationships: Blaise of Gorhaut/Ariane de Carenzu/Lisseut de Vezet Characters: Blaise of Gorhaut, Lisseut de Vezet, Ariane de Carenzu Summary: A night of mourning and desire in Carenzu, some years after the events of A Song for Arbonne.
The Light Against the Dark (5412 words) by perryvic Fandom: Fionavar Tapestry - Guy Gavriel Kay Rating: Not Rated Warning: Author Chose Not To Use Archive Warnings Characters: Lisen, Amairgen Whitebranch Summary: Lisen of the Wood they called her, most blessed by all of the faces of the Goddess, the brightest most beautiful thread that would ever grace the Weaver’s Loom in all the worlds. A deiena bearing the Goddesses gifts - and because nothing of the Mother could truly be that simple, it was a double edged gift sharper than a Dalreidan blade.
On we two the high stars will shine (6403 words) by Scribe Fandom: Fionavar Tapestry - Guy Gavriel Kay Rating: Teen And Up Audiences Warning: No Archive Warnings Apply Characters: Loren Silvercloak, Matt Soren Summary: The story of Matt and Loren.

But already the twin domes of the sanctuary could be seen proud and high on the horizon, and flowers were starting to bloom again out of ruined gardens and all across the city.

(Doing a new post, because the previous one is almost a month old and is surely off people's F-lists by now)
So I just finished "Under Heaven" -- (yes, it took me over a month to finish it... I've been very busy at work) -- and now I have a new favorite GGK book. This book was absolutely a tour de force. As a history nerd, who is fascinated by this kind of history (courts, kings, advisors, as well as Asian cultures) this book intrigued me, but the story itself was so, so much more. Previously, my favorite was "Last Light of the Sun" because of the take on Norse mythology and culture (which also fascinates me) but "Under Heaven" blew it out of the water.
I won't go into any details, as it could be spoilery, but this book is amazing. I'm going to be hard-pressed to find a book to hold my fancy like this one did.

No posts about the newest GGK book, "Under Heaven"?
Wow. I'm.... kinda shocked.
I'm reading it presently and enjoying it immensely. The man sure knows how to tell a story! If you enjoyed "The Last Light of the Sun" I think you'll be pleased with this one!

I don't know why, but I just had an urge to post this little success of mine. I write a lot, and have since I was a kid, but I'm really beginning to want to get into it seriously. As a start, to help build up my discipline and confidence, I've been writing and posting fanfiction on a few LJ communities and forums(mostly of the BBC series Robin Hood - *covers head with arms* don't hit me, crap show, crap story, really great characters). But I was discussing some of my influences with a few people who like what I've written, and mentioned that one of my greatest influences for a particular short story was Kay's Ysabel, and that his writing is, in general, a huge influence on me.
I got back two replies that one had ordered Ysabel, and another had ordered Ysabel and the whole of the Tapestry.
Whoo! After years of trying desperately to get someone to please read this brilliant author, finally, in one day, I get two people interested.
I'm so pleased with myself :) Now to let GGK's incredible writing do the rest.
The story, if anyone is interested, is on my LJ, here: http://vaknathi.livejournal.com/2974.html It's very short and sad, more a drabble than a story, and I doubt you need to watch the show to understand, just have a little knowledge of the Robin Hood legend.

I've posted a short book review of GGK's poetry collection, Beyond This Dark House, over in my journal. Links to several transcribed excerpts are included, because I love him enough to want to share his words with the world.

5:43 pm - Beyond This Dark House and Sarantine Scents

Has anyone read Beyond This Dark House? I have yet to see it anywhere (I mean a brick-n-mortar, not amazon). Anyway, any impressions of it?
I've just begun The Last Light of the Sun, but I see there have already been several discussions here regarding that book--nor am I far enough into it to contribute much.
One last thing. It has been some time since I have read the Sarantine Mosaic and something minor has captured my attention. Scent plays an interesting role in the books. Is there ever a concrete description of the perfume worn by Alixana (and Shirin)? We're told it's distinctive, but I can't remember what associations were given.

10:07 pm - Quick question for British GGK fans...
|

poodlerat

...or anyone else who might know the answer.
Have you seen the new British editions of The Fionavar Tapestry? I was thinking of buying copies for myself, because I love Martin Springett's original covers, but I can't tell if the picture wraps all the way around the book or not (the way it did on the original editions.) Does anyone know?
Thanks!

I've recently read Ysabel, and then, being out of good books to read, decided to re-read A song for Arbonne, (one of GGK's book I haven't read as much as the others). And there, in the first chapter, he speaks of an ancient arch, very much like the one Ned sees at Glanum. Given it's said in the forepages that Kay inspired himself from Provence around Aix en Provence to write about Arbonne, I suppose it's the same monument that's used in the two books.

1:56 pm - Mahgoti?
|

oenone_borealis
|
I'm currently reading Tigana and I'm wondering if there's a real-life analogue of the mahgoti tea mentioned throughout the story. Khav is equivalent to coffee--as can be discerned from context, but there's little said of mahgoti tea other than that it can be quite bitter.
EDIT: It's unlikely to be real tea (Camellia sinesis) because of Catriana's memories of picking mushrooms and mahgoti leaves in the forest. I don't know what amount of sunlight the tea plant needs, but as far as I know it doesn't grow in the Mediterranean regions.
Another factor pointing to it being an herbal infusion is that it is a sedative.
Any insight?
Thanks! Julie

2:31 pm - Ysabel

I finished reading Ysabel last night. I adored it, far more than Last Light of the Sun. I think it's because I fell into this one and had a moment of OMG! *flail* that I didn't have with LLoTS.
It did not, however, unthrone Lions as my favorite Kay book ever.
( This contains no real spoilers, but better safe than sorryCollapse )
Question to the Community: anyone know who made the icon I'm using? I'm pretty sure that I got it from here ages ago, but I never credited the maker, and I would like to.

If you don't mind waiting a few more weeks, SFBC has Ysabel for a really reasonable price; it just doesn't ship until 2/27. Plus, they're running a special right now (though it's supposed to be a lottery-type scratch-off game, every time I've tried it (including the paper one I got in the mail), I've come up with 20% off). So I ordered it online this morning.

So the release date in the US is Feb 6th, but I found it at my local Borders on Tuesday. Worth looking out for it, if you haven't already!
No review yet... I'm saving it for tomorrow, when I can actually afford to be up all night reading.
